This is good, Max! Your writing style reminds me a little of Peter Heller. Not sure if you’ve read his stuff, but I think you’d like it. I’m finishing up his novel, The Dog Stars, now. Good luck and keep it going!
This chapter has such rich imagery and has a symbolic atmosphere that pulled me right in. The way you describe the setting sun “among the wisps of white and pinkish gold that crossed the ever-darkening skies” so descriptive it felt like I could see it unfolding in front of me as the colors shift and fade into night.
Overall, the writing is vivid, and I found myself carried along by the mood and the sense of place you created. It actually made me think about his name ✨Charon✨ and how everything happens by the river. It almost feels like he’s guiding us through this world the way the mythological ferryman carries souls across.
There was elements of biology with the way you described the mechanics of a bird of prey. Then there is the cinematic articulation, as a photographer, your words help me visualize. Excellent chapter look forward to more!
I love the nostalgia lines. I often feel that - a longing for another time, or something I’ve never truly experienced, but somehow know in my soul.

It made me curious about what’s next for him.
Thanks so much! As for what’s next, you’ll find out next week!
